Auction 24 offered a truly astounding selection of Canada’s rarest and most desirable transfer-printed ginger beers. Several of these had never come up for public sale before. The L.Rivard from Trois Rivières, Quebec is one of four known. The trademark image of the explorer Laviolette is certainly one of Canada’s very best. The Meikle Brothers Black Bear Brand is a very rare West Coast bottle with an iconic trademark. There were many stellar New Brunswick pieces in this sale. Standouts included: a one-of-a-kind two-tone Givans with an upside down transfer; a one-of-a-kind solid cream Givans; and an impressive display Gurd’s bottle from the Saint John Maritime Division. There are only three styles of ginger beer from Prince Edward Island. This sale included near mint examples of all three varieties! There was one Ontario bottle of note – an extremely rare Christin from Ottawa that is a unique form manufactured by the Brantford Stoneware Company.

New Brunswick is famous for its primitives and we had many fine specimens on offer. There were several rare Foley Pottery pieces from St. John bottlers Garnett and Dolan Bros. There was also a Devine dated 1854. There was a small selection of stoneware. From New Brunswick we had a rare Pelee Island Wineries jug marked by a Maritime agent. From Ottawa, Ontario we had an extremely rare merchant marked jug that reads: “Purveyor to the Governor General”.
