Auction 24 - Lots 11 to 20

11

Wm. B. Daley, Saint John. NB-41.

The Daley quarts are another rare and beautiful example of Foley pottery bottles.

This example is near mint. The blue top is an attractive slightly mottled colour. The lip has three rough spots that were almost certainly caused by the cork being pried out. On the shoulder at the front is a very very shallow flake that more closely ressembles a spot that did not get glazed. Regardless it is very minor. There is one small clean potstone near the base. The base edge is perfect. The glaze is remarkably clean and stain free.

Certainly one of the very best possible examples.

Opening Bid: $400

Estimated Range: $700-1000

Sold for $900

Excelsior Bottling Co., Calais & St. Stephen. NB-99.

There are two variants of the Excelsior bottle. Both are exceedingly rare.

This one has the larger writing and slightly shorter crown. A highly attractive well struck transfer. This example is in incredible condition. We hardly ever call something mint because there is nearly always some small flaw. Despite obviously being dug - this bottle is perfect. The stopper wire is heavily rusted and the transferred stopper itself is badly faded but the bottle itself could be no better.

If you need one for your collection or are looking for an upgrade - this is the one to buy.

Opening Bid: $500

Estimated Range: $800-1200

Sold for $650

Cassidy's Ginger Ale Works, Chatham. NB-03

The Cassidy's is a very scarce NB bottle.

This is a Possil Pottery marked bottle. When we wrote the book we could not find one that was marked legibly. The mark on this one is weak but can be read.

The condition of this bottle is near mint. The lip is perfect. There is a sort of chip on the base edge and a tiny flake both of which appear to clearly be in-manufacture flaws. Otherwise the bottle is perfect. The glaze is exceptionally clean and free of stain.

Opening Bid: $500

Estimated Range: $600-1000

Sold for $650

14

A.C. Roy, Campbellton. NB-01.

The AC Roy ginger beer is a rare bottle with a highly attractive transfer. Campbellton is a small town in the North of New Brunswick.

This example is very near mint. There is no damage whatsoever. The lip and base edge are perfect. This bottle does not appear to have been dug. The stopper is perfect with a strong transfer and clean bail. There is one heavy rub on the shoulder at the rear and a bit of glaze discolouration on the right side - mostly at the rear. This is a Munderloh bottle.

It is hard to imagine one much better.

Opening Bid: $400

Estimated Range: $600-$800

Sold for $400

H. Christin, Ottawa. ON-100.

There are only a handful of Ontario bottles in this sale. This Christin is by far the best. It was just dug this past summer in Ottawa.

The Christin is a very rare example of an unusual style of Brantford Stoneware ginger beer. Only three manufacturers are known to have marked bottles of this type. Two of them are Ottawa pop makers. Christin bottles are very hard to come by. This is a dug bottle with many flaws associated with burial. The typical poor Brantford glaze is in evidence with plenty of heavy grazing. There are numerous potstones some with radiating crazing. There is some heavy black underglaze staining in the front at the top of the crest. The lip is very good with just one small 1/2 inch hairline that is hardly worth mentioning. The base edge is rough as it nearly always is with these bottles.

All these issues may make this bottle sound like it is in poor shape, but really it is quite good. There are no significant chips or cracks. The lip and base edge are relatively clean.

While the glaze has many imperfections, it actually gives the bottle a good deal of honest character. Mint examples of this bottle are near impossible to find. For a Brantford bottle this one is fairly good.

Opening Bid: $800

Estimated Range: $1000-1500

Sold for $800

Wm. B. Daley, St. John, inside thread. NB-43.

The Wm Daley quart size ginger beers are among the Maritimes most beautiful.

This example is near mint. The horse head is very nicely rendered. The inside thread variant is the rarer of the two types. The only damage is a very fine 1/4 inch long hairline in the edge of the lip. The base edge is flawless. The glaze is very clean with only a bit of stain.

About as good as they get!

Opening Bid: $400

Estimated Range: $600-1000

Sold for $500

17

Wm. B. Daley, Saint John, lightning Stopper. NB-42.

This is the lightning stopper variant of the Daley quart.

This is the best possible example. It is mint. The lip and base edge are flawless. The stopper is original with a clean strong transfer. The glaze of the body is very clean and totally free of stain. Just a gorgeous bottle.

A definite upgrade no matter how good yours might be.

Opening Bid: $300

Estimated Range: $400-600

Sold for $300

18

JR Bennett, Saint John's. NF-01

Newfoundland has just the one transferred ginger beer and therefore they are highly sought after. Incised with the maker's mark RILEY.

The condition of this example is good. The lip is excellent with only minor imperfections. There are three cracks low on the sides that run into the base. The worst one is a bit over an inch long and is visible to the left of the crest. The other two are each about 1/2 long. There is a large flat flake off the base. This is a dug bottle. There is relatively heavy underglaze rust chiefly on the front around the transfer.

Opening Bid:$300

Estimated Range: $400-600

Sold for $325

McIntyre & Townsend Invalid's Stout. NB-09.

The McIntyre & Townsend bottles have terrific crests. The full set of two pints and two quarts make a terrific display. We are pleased to offer all four in this sale.

The two-tone pint size McIntyre & Townsend bottle is the rarest of the four variants. You have to love the the fact that this bottle was advertising stout for invalids. This is a near mint example. There is a very minor 1/4 inch glaze hairline in the lip that does not penetrate through. The lip is otherwise perfect. The base edge is flawless. There is the slightest bit of underglaze staining and a bit of light rust on the base but the glaze is in excellent overall condition.

You will be hard pressed to find one better.

Opening Bid: $400

Estimated Range: $600-800

Sold for $450

20

McIntyre & Townsend Invalid's Stout, Saint John. NB-90.

This quart size bottle is the mate to the previous lot.

This bottle is in excellent shape. The glaze is near perfect. There are a few tiny pecks in the lip. There is one separation mark on the base. There is a large glob of glaze dripping down the right side. Just a gorgeous large bottle.

Opening Bid: $200

Estimated Range: $400-600

Sold for $550.
