Auction 24 - Lots 61 to 70

61

Dolan Bros, Quarts, St. John. NB-59, NB-75.

This lot includes two Dolan quarts. The 1910 is in poor shape but displays well. There is a 4 inch hairline in the rear. There is a large chip off the base edge - also at the back. The glaze is fairly clean but there is some rust.

The second bottle is in good condition aside from a very long hairline that travels from the lip down the left side to about the mid-point of the transfer. The glaze is nice and clean. An attractive bottle despite the damage.

Opening Bid: $50

Estimated Range: $75-100

Sold for $60

R.J. Garnett, Cider Style, Saint John, NB. NB-50.

One criticism of primitives as a category would be the lack of variation in form. The vast majority are broad-shouldered cylinders that taper to the base. It is rare to see a really different form.

Two New Brunswick firms used primitive bottles with a very unique shape. RJ Garnett and J Devine (both of St.John) used a style of bottle that more closely ressembles a wine - with a straight taper and no real shoulder at all. This type of bottle likely held cider.

This RJ Garnett bottle is a gorgeous unique piece. It a rare and unusual shape. There are only five examples known. The glazing in the top is a wonderful carmel colour. This is almost certainly a Foley product. The lip finish is also very different. Certainly a bottle that stands out on a shelf. This bottle appears near mint. There is some glaze crizzling in the body but otherwise there is no visible damage. However, the lip has been professionally repaired. This is an outstanding job. The glaze character has been reproduced perfectly. Because the repair is so good it is impossible to tell the extent of the damage.

Opening Bid: $300

Estimated Range: $500-700

Sold for $700.

R.J. Garnett Pale Yellow, Saint John NB. NB-49.

This is another rare and beautiful Foley pottery primitive. The yellow glazing in the lip and shoulder is hightly attrative. Near mint save the usual glaze crizzling common to Foley bottles. There is the slightest bit of rust at the back.

Opening Bid: $250

Estimated Range: $300-500

Sold for $400

64

RG Garnett Blue Top, Saint John. NB-52.

The third in a trilogy of gorgeous colourful Garnett primitives.

This blue top quart is stunning! Note this one reads "RG" and not "RJ" like the previous two. Excellent condition. Large flake off the base at the rear that just comes up the base edge a slight bit. This is totally hidden. There is some wear at the shoulder but this is very minor.

Opening Bid: $200

Estimated Range: $300-$400

Sold for $425

65

P Devine 1853, Saint John. NB-28

You have to love New Brunswick's dated primitives!

This 1853 P. Devine is a real handsome early example. Near mint. There is a flake that is barely glaze deep at the back of the neck. The bottle is a bit worn and soiled looking but this only adds to its character.

Incredible condition for a piece of this age!

Opening Bid: $300

Estimated Range: $400-500

Sold for $400

66

Dolan Bros., St. John, Foley Pottery Quart. NB-40

This Dolan quart is a another rare and attractive example of a Foley Pottery bottle. The blue glaze in the shoulder is especially nice.

The glaze colour and quality is completely different than the shoulder. The lip is a greenish blue colour. The glaze is roughly textured. This is in sharp contrast to the glass smooth bright blue shoulder. The lip is reminiscent of the green top Dolan pint and quart. Despite the colour variance, we are sure this bottle is near mint and the lip is original. The lip does have a 1/2" chip that has been repaired.

The body of this bottle is beautiful. The glaze is near perfect with just a bit of crizzling and some minor underglaze stain.

A very good example of a tough bottle!

Opening Bid: $200

Estimated Range: $400-500

Sold for $220

67

Carvell & Grogan, Saint John. NB-22.

This Carvell & Grogan quart is a very crude primitive. This is a very heavy bottle! It weighs a ton. The oversized lip lends a lot of character. While exhibiting the usual signs of wear - this bottle is mint.

There is no damage whatsoever. Quite incredible for such a heavy early piece.

Opening Bid: $150

Estimated Range: $200-300

Sold for $325

68

Dolan Bros., Saint John primitive quart. NB-37.

This is a great example of a quart size Dolan Bros primitive. Like the Carvell & Grogan in the previous listing this is a heavy bottle with an oversize lip. This is a real handsome blue top bottle. These two bottles are so similar that we would venture they were made by the some potter. Near mint. An excellent example with only minor imperfections. There is the slightest bit of underglaze rust at the back. A couple of potstones but no damage.

A terrific bottle!

Opening Bid:$150

Estimated Range: $200-300

Sold for $275

69

WB Sargeant & Co, Saint John NB. NB-57.

This quart Sargeant primitive is identical to dated examples from 1854 but this one is not dated.

Very good condition. There are two fine hairline cracks that cross on the neck and shoulder to the right of the incised lettering. These are very thin. The lip is roughly moulded with a few flakes off the underside. There is a 1/2 inch firing crack in the base. The lettering is difficult to read as the blue glazing that was used to fill it is quite pale.

Opening Bid: $100

Estimated Range: $150-200

Sold for $170

70

J. W. Thomas, St. Stephen NB, pint and quart. NB-63 and 64.

This lot includes a pair of JW Thomas primtives - a pint and quart. Both are mint. The glazing is perfect and these bottles appear brand new. The quart has a tiny separation flake on the base.

You will never see a better pair.

Opening Bid: $100

Estimated Range: $200-300

Sold for $190
