Auction 24 - Lots 71 to 80

71

J. W. Thomas, St. Stephen quart. NB-63.

A mint example of the JW Thomas quart with no blue in the lettering.

Opening Bid: $75

Estimated Range: $100-150

Sold for $90

72

Wm Evans, Saint John, NB. NB-50.

This Wm Evans quart is a handsome example of a Foley Pottery primitive. Strong broad shoulder and attractive carmel colour glazing.

The top of this bottle has been very poorly repaired. The entire top has been painted over. It would appear there was just one large chip that was filled but it is difficult to tell. Certainly a strong candidate for a professional repair. There is some underglaze stain and surface rust on the body. There is a large chip off the base edge at the front.

Opening Bid: $50

Estimated Range: $75-100

Sold for $55

73

Dolan Bros., Saint John NB. NB-40.

This quart size Dolan is a Foley bottle. This is a rare bottle in poorly repaired condition. The lip has had extensive work and has been badly painted. There is extensive overpaint on the body that likely covers both some cracking and some holes. There are several base edge chips that have been badly filled and painted.

Opening Bid: $50

Estimated Range: $75-100

Sold for $80

74

P&M Devine, J. Devine, Saint John quarts. NB-27 and 312.

This lot includes two Devine quarts. The J. Devine blue top has been badly repaired. The entire top has been painted over. The body is in pretty good shape with just a couple of small flakes and potstones.

The P&M Devine is repaired extensively. For an amateur repair the job is not bad. Both the lip and base edge have been worked on. The glaze match is pretty close so you do not readily see the work.

Opening Bid: $50

Estimated Range: $75-$100

Sold for $95

75

G Simmonds. PE-01.

This is a very fine example of the grey body G. Simmonds primitive from Charlottetown PEI. This is a very small example with a narrow shoulder. Perfectly mint with a great heavy salt glazing!

Opening Bid: $100

Estimated Range: $150-$200

Sold for $130

76

Wm. Pipe, Kingston. ON-71.

This William Pipe pint from Kingston is a rare example of a Brantford Stoneware Manufacturing Company stovepipe style ginger beer. Brantford made bottles are always crude but this one is exceptionally so. The glaze is heavily textured a bit like skin that has soaked too long in water. The glaze is crazed like nearly all these bottles. The condition is relatively good. There is some overall underglaze stain. This is a dug bottle. There is a two inch deep flake off the base and a large chip. This damage is well hidden. The lip is remarkably good. The transfer is a bit smudged. Displays well.

Opening Bid: $150

Estimated Range: $200-$300

Sold for $240

77

T. Driscoll, St. John. NB-81.0

The T.Driscoll quart should not be confused with its more common cousin the JJ Driscoll. These bottles are quite scarce.

This example is in fair condition. The glaze is heavily stained with rust. There is a lot of rust on the base. There is a 5 inch long hairline in the back from the neck down the shoulder. The lip has a tiny flake. There is a separation mark on the base. Despite these issues the bottle displays quite well.

Opening Bid: $75

Estimated Range: $100-150

Sold for $75

78

JJ Driscoll, St. John. NB-79.

There are two minor variants of the JJ Driscoll quart. This is the one with the smaller stars in the outside ring of the transfer. This an an excellent example. The glaze is very clean. The lip is flawless. There is a separation mark on the base.

Opening Bid: $75

Estimated Range: $100-150

Sold for $75

79

Estimated Range: $200-300

Sold for $160
