Death of Wolfe Cooler.
In the mid-19th century, stoneware water coolers were a commonplace fixture in inns, taverns, and other public houses. Many quite elaborately decorated pieces were produced.
This cooler is likely a product of one of the Denbyshire potteries in England. What makes this example special is the top front motif. It depicts the classic scene of Wolfe's death following the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. This design was very popular in Canada at mid-century. While well known on transfer print tableware, this design is not known to have been produced on more utilitarian ware - such as this cooler.
We believe this is almost certainly a piece produced for the Canadian market. The design is exceptionally rare, if not unique. This is a large cooler at 5 gallons. It was once painted and there remain traces of red paint. The condition is overall excellent. There is some seperation and cracking to the applied decorations. There is a chip off the toes of the left-hand mounted man. We have taken a lot of photos so you should be able to readily judge the condition for yourself.
A very impressive, museum quality, piece of Canadian history!
Opening Bid: $1,000
Estimated Range: $2,000-3,000
