W. Brunet & Cie, St. Roch.
This one gallon druggist jug has a most unusual feature. Incised designs on Canadian stoneware are extremely rare. This piece has a mortar and pestle incised beneath the writing making an otherwise unremarkable crock extraordinary!
Near mint with only minor imperfections. Wonderful!
Opening Bid: $200
Estimated Range: $300-400
Sold for $200. |

Flack and Van Arsdale Bird Jug.
The Flack & Van Arsdale potters of Cornwall, Ontario are famous for their birds. They used at least two designs - both of which are featured in this sale.
This two gallon jug is not makers' marked but is certainly a Flack piece. The bird design is very well rendered. The crock itself is extremely clean. At the rear is a large crack which runs about 14 inches long. There is a base edge chip. This damage is not visible from the front so the crock displays perfectly mint.
A very attractive piece.
Opening Bid: $200
Estimated Range: $300-400

Still - this crock displays very well and looks fantastic!

Flack and Van Arsdale Fern Crock.

Opening Bid: $200
Estimated Range: $300-400
Sold for $200. |

Flack and Van Arsdale Double Flower.
The Flack & Van Arsdale potters only used a handful of designs on their wares - typically birds or single flowers. This large 5 gallon jug sports an unusual double flower.
Very clean looking jug with some condition issues. Pot stone to the left of the volume measure. Spider crack 2 1/2 inches in the lip. Long 10 inch crack at rear bottom. Good solid handle with one flake. Sounds terrible but the only significant damage is the crack at the rear.
This crock is solid and looks very good with a great double flower.
Opening Bid: $150
Estimated Range: $250-350

Louis Bourget, Quebec.
A nice three gallon jug from Louis Bourget of Quebec City. Not the incising indicates Lower Quebec, meaning the lower town. The maker of the jug is likely one of the later Farrar firms but possibly Flack & Van Arsdale. The flower is rendered quite well for this type of design. Good condition. Pock marked around shoulder. Large lip chip right side and two smaller chips on the left. Several pot stones in the rear. Some glaze staining. A good piece with a great single flower.
Opening Bid: $200
Estimated Range: $300-400

Speckled Jug.
Round the turn of the twentieth century, stoneware began to appear very uniform and boring. Not this piece. A later style - likely 1910 - this jug has the most wonderful speckled glaze. It appears blue over yellow. Near mint condition with one small chip on the sharp shoulder edge.
Opening Bid: $150
Estimated Range: $200-300
Lot not sold. |
