Ace Coffee Tin.
We are pleased this sale to be offering four excellent tins. Three are Western five pound coffee tins.
This Ace Coffee tin from the Stabrooks Co., Winnipeg is arguably the best. Fabulous graphics of an "ace" pilot and his bi-plane. The sides show the plane flying over an abstract scene that looks like a classic blasted First World War battlefield. Terrific colours!!
This is a Canadian-made tin marked by Macdonald MFG. Co of Toronto. Very good condition. One of the side seams has let go allowing the tin to narrow slightly in the body. The left side (with Macdonald mark) has considerable paint wear in the blue sky. The opposite side has a bit of scratching around where the bail meets the body. Overall high point wear to the paint. We rate this a 7.5 out of 10 but you can judge for yourself from the many photos.
A very rare and attractive early tin!
Opening Bid: $300
Estimated Range: $500-600
Sold for $475. |

Rodeo Coffee Tin.
This Rodeo coffee tin is from Stabrooks of Winnipeg. This company clearly understood the value of a good graphic! Picturing a cowboy on a bucking horse - this tin has some real iconic Western imagery!
This is a Canadian-made tin marked by Macdonald MFG. Co of Toronto. Good condition. Very strong paint. The front is clean in the main image with only a few minor areas of wear. The rear is worse with some considerably speckling. One large dent at rear right that could likely be straightened. The rim at the front shows evidence of crimping. The lid is heavily dented - giving the impression it was hammered shut many times. Bail included but not shown.
We rate this tin a strong 6.5 out of ten - but again the photos speak for themselves.
Opening Bid: $200
Estimated Range: $300-400
Sold for $375. |

Blue Ribbon Tea Tin.
This Blue Ribbon Tea tin is early and beautiful. It measures 9 x 6 1/2 x 4 1/2. Each side has a fabulous image. The front shows a dogsled team outside a road house that advertises "Good Beds and Blue Ribbon Tea." The caption reads: "Yukon River Roadhouse. A start in the land of the Midnight Sun." The right side shows an outcropping with the caption: "Siwash Rock Stanley Park, Vancouver". The rear shows a group of natives in ceremonial dress with the caption: "Indians of the Tshmshan Tribe B.C." The left side shows a falls with the caption: "Bonnington Falls, Kootenay River, B.C".
Blue Ribbon had offices in most major Western cities - including Vancouver. Given the choice of images - this one was quite possibly made for the BC branch. The tin itself is Canadian-made, marked by the Thomas Davidson company of Montreal. Overall wear, a bit heavier on the front than other sides. One area of paint missing on the front about the size of a dime. The colours are strong. The images are relatively complex with lots of colour.
A very rare tin with tremendous graphic art.

JJ McLaughlin, Toronto Ginger Beer. ON-159.
J.J. McLaughlin was one of Canada's largest soda manufacturers in his time. There are consequently many bottles with his mark.
This variant is by far the scarcest and most desireable of his ginger beers. This square shoulder bottle was made by the Brantford Stoneware Manufacturing Co. Examples of this bottle are notoriously poor on account of the poor quality of the pottery. This one is excellent. Near perfect lip with the tiniest of flea bites. Perfect shoulder. Excellent glaze with a bit of rust where the blob meets the neck. The base edge has three flakes. One is visible in the photo at rear. The other two are on the bottom. Well stamped front and back.
The best example of this rare bottle you are likely to see.
Opening Bid: $800
Estimated Range: $1,000-1,200

The Dolan Brothers pints are much harder to find then the quarts.
This 1901 example is in spectacular mint condition. Note this is a designation we seldom use. Perfect lip, shoulder, body and base edge. Some very minor imperfection to the glaze of the body, but nothing noteworthy. Just a beautiful example of this rare small size bottle!
A definite upgrade; the best you will find.
