Auction 27 - MISCELLANEOUS Lots MI-1 to MI-17

MI-1

Rare Size McLaren's, Perth ON Whiskey.

There are only a handful of Canadian companies that used embossed strap-side whiskeys. The McLaren company of Perth, Ontario is one of these. Their bottles exist in at least three sizes and possible variants thereof. Coloured examples are rare and highly collectible.

This example is exceptional for its size. It is the smallest size at just 6 1/2". This size is rare in any colour but especially so in yellow glass. It is the only one known to us. The condition is near mint with just a bit of internal stain. A very rare and beautiful little bottle. (Photos show the same bottle front and back lit).

Opening Bid: $250

Estimated Range: $400-500

Sold for $425.

MI-2

Pair of Persian Saddle Flasks.

Persian saddle flasks are attractive early bottles that were made for at least a century or more. This pair likely dates from the mid-nineteen hundreds. Note the colour difference. The smaller one is a light moss green. It is 9" tall. The larger is a teal. The teal colour is the more common for these flasks. It is 10 1/4" tall. The larger flask is in excellent condition. Aside from some internal stain, there is no damage. Very thin glass. Nasty pontil. Oversize crude lip. The smaller flask is near mint. No stain. Studded with tiny seed bubbles. Very heavy glass. Pontiled. A gorgeous pair of flasks.

Opening Bid: $150

Estimated Range: $200-300

Sold for $150.

MI-3

Huge Black Glass Barrel

This blackglass barrel bottle is a big heavy piece. 11 1/4" tall. Extremely heavy piece - maybe 10 pounds!! The glass is very thick. Ground lip. Likely a pharmacy piece. Very rare form. Smooth base. Near mint condition with one 1/2" chip in the lip that may well be from grinding. Beautiful gloss to the glass and no stain. A beautiful unique piece of black glass!

Opening Bid: $100

Estimated Range: $150-200

For sale for $100.

MI-4

Large Black Glass Decanter

This is a very unusual blackglass bottle. It is huge at a whopping 13" high. Very heavy glass. The bottom third has been ground. Heavy attractive wheel cut design at mid-body. Applied-lip. Likely third quarter 19th century. Origins unknown. Near mint condition with a bit of light scratching. A unique piece that was likely made as a fancy decanter or presentation piece of some kind. Beautiful big bottle!

Opening Bid: $100

MI-5

Pair of Ornate Barber Bottles.

An attractive pair of highly ornate barber bottles. The pale yellow green one is 7 3/4" tall. Some nice gilt and enamel design work that is largely intact. Pontiled. Slight panelling to the body. A really pretty piece. The blue one measures 12 1/2" tall including the blown stopper. The gilding and enamel are quite good. Pontiled. Both bottles are near mint. A very good early pair of American barber bottles.

Opening Bid: $75

Estimated Range: $100-150

Sold for $150.

MI-6

Cobalt Gilt Toilet Set

A highly ornate toilet set with cologne and pomade jars. Both are sharply molded bottles with etched and gilded design work. The designs are elaborate vines and flowers. Much of the gilding is gone but the etching is clear. The glass is unusual. The exterior glass is clear with a second interior layer of cobalt. This is quite plain on the stoppers. Both bottles are in very good condition. The cologne has a couple of tiny flea bites to the stopper and the lip. Given the sharp edges it is remarkable there is not more damage! The stopper of the pomade has a 1/4" chip and some small flea bites. The body of the jar is perfect. Both pieces are made of very heavy cut glass. These have good age with plenty of basal wear. Certainly 19th century bottles. The pomade is 5 1/2" and cologne 8 1/2" tall including stoppers. An attractive colourful set.

Opening Bid: $75

Estimated Range: $100-150

Sold for $190.

MI-7

Oil & Vinegar Set.

An unusual and beautiful set of oil and vinegar bottles. The two swirled bottles are fused onto a small paperweight type base. The bottles have ground and polished pontils. The pour spouts are silver. See photos for the makers' stamps. Near mint condition. There is a syrup-like tobacco-coloured stain in the fusion between the bottles. We tried a simple soap and water clean with no effect. A bleach might do better.

Opening Bid: $75

Estimated Range: $100-150

For sale for $75.

MI-8

Pair of Mini Advertising Syphons.

You do not often see these tiny syphons which were advertising give-aways. The clear one is just 6 1/2" tall including stopper. Base embossed MADE IN ENGLAND. Intact. Near mint condition. The green one is larger at 7" tall. Base etched WITH COMPLIMENTS FROM A. PINK & SONS. The stopper is marked for the British Syphon Company. One large bruise on the side about the size of a dime. Small chip on side near base. A rare pair of bottles.

Near mint with one tiny flea bite on the base edge. Matching stopper with the initials WL scratched on the base. The second bottle from the left has some nice design work. Cuts on shoulder and base edges as well as on the stopper. Some real pretty wheel etched doves and ferns around teh middle. Near mint. 6" tall. The smallest bottle at front center has a pyrimid block style. Very heavy glass. Just 3 1/8" tall with no stopper. Mint. Back center is a lovely early blown bottle with gilt decoration. Pontiled. Original stopper. 5 1/2" tall. Mint. Some loss to the gilding. Second from right front is a cut glass bottle with pour spout. 4" tall. No stopper. Near mint. Back right is a very ornate bottle that was likely used for medicine. 7" tall. Note the stopper has a tiny spoon for dispensing. Extensive wheel cutting with a berry and leaf pattern around the middle. Near mint with a couple of tiny flea bites. A good collection of early perfumes.

Four Early American Bottles.

Four attractive early American bottles. The large panelled one is a pefume. 8 1/4" including stopper. Near mint with just a wisp of stain. Pair of early colognes. Highly ornate moulding. Both have base chipping but are otherwise good. Some internal stain in the ribbed example. Mint these would be costly. Each 4 5/8" tall. Tiny early medicine embossed D.EVANS CAMOMILE PILLS. Heavily stained but no damage. Very crude little bottle. All four bottles are circa. 1860. All pontiled. A great lot of early American glass.

Opening Bid: $75

Estimated Range: $100-150

Sold at $80.

MI-11

Lot of Five Whiskeys

Five gorgeous coloured plain whiskeys. Four are handled. The two amber ones are early American bottles. Both pontiled. The smaller one is just 5 1/2" tall. Orange amber glass. Near mint with a bit of cleanable internal stain. The larger one is 8 3/8" tall. Damage where the handle is applied. At both ends the glass cracked when the handle was added. This damage is serious but not obvious. Older stopper with mother of pearl inset. The cobalt handled bottle is likely English or European in origin. Smooth base, but possibly a polished pontil. Well applied handle. Small pour spout. 6 1/2" tall. Good condition. Tiny lip chip. Heavy internal stain. The dark green handled bottle is a near perfect mate to the previous blue one. Polished pontil. Beautiful bright grass green glass. Heavy lip chipping but otherwise clean. The second cobalt bottle has no handle. It is odd for having the lip ground around the outside. Obviously the stopper was a kind of cap. Likely English or European, but possible American. Pontiled. Near mint condition with just a bit of internal stain. 7 3/4" tall. A lot of early bottles with some terrific colour!

Opening Bid: $75

Estimated Range: $120-150

Sold for $75.

MI-12

Old Crow Bourbon Whiskey Lot.

This lot contains a bottle and matching advertising tray. The bottle is a mid-nineteenth century blackglass whiskey. Pontiled. Chalk full of bubbles. Mint. Large shield shaped label with crow trademark. Heavy wear to the label but still largely legible. Text at bottom indicates the bottle is from the Paris Bourbon Co. of Kentucky and is dated Nov 7, 1860. The signature is difficult to read but the surname is definitely Crow. 11" tall. The advertising tray is an earlier one. Measuring 17 1/2" by 11 3/4". Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey bottled by the National Distillers of New York, NY. Heavy wear to the tray. Maybe a 5 out of 10. Still - the graphics are relatively clear and the tray is not warped or dented. An interesting lot with great display appeal. It is very rare to find a bottle of this age with a label.

Opening Bid: $75

Estimated Range: $100-150

For sale for $75.

MI-13

Lot of Four Barber Bottles.

Four quite different barber bottles. The clear pressed glass one is 7 3/4" tall. Silver plate band around the shoulder. This is a two piece bottle that unscrews at the shoulder. Near mint. The small amethyst one is just 5" tall without the stopper. Large lip chip. Otherwise very clean. Great colour in this little bottle! The opaline one is 7" tall. Mint condition. The blackglass one is made of glass so dark that no colour is visible even under strong light. Dark amethyst stopper that is likely not original. Mint condition. The first three are definitely antiques. The blackglass one has no base wear and may be a newer bottle. A good grouping with a variety of shapes and colours.

Opening Bid: $50

Estimated Range: $75-100

Sold for $50.

MI-14

Stoppered Black Glass Decanter.

This blackglass bottle is most unusual. It is a heavy squat bottle 8 1/4" tall including the stopper. The footed base is cut. The mouth is ground and polished. The stopper is original and made of heavy cut glass. The colour of this bottle is difficult to describe. It is a greenish grey. Near mint condition with one minor scratch on the body about 2" long. No idea of origin but likely English or European. Quite an attractive blown piece in a different coloured glass.

Opening Bid: $50

Estimated Range: $75-100

For sale for $50.

MI-15

A great beer tray advertising Olympia Beer from the Capital Brewing Co. of Olympia Washington. Terrific graphic of a young woman astride a bottle. She holds a dreamy large size pint of beer. Tray is heavily worn. A 5 or 6 out of 10. A good advertising tray.
